Overview

What this certification is and how the exam works.

CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to design, configure, manage, and troubleshoot wired and wireless networks. The exam covers five domains: Networking Concepts (the OSI model, ports and protocols, network appliances, cloud concepts, and IPv4/IPv6 addressing), Network Implementation (routing and switching technologies, wireless standards, and physical installations), Network Operations (documentation, monitoring, high availability, and disaster recovery), Network Security (security concepts, hardening, and physical security), and Network Troubleshooting (a structured methodology plus cabling, connectivity, services, and performance issues). The exam has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, with a passing score of 720 on a scale of 100–900. CompTIA recommends CompTIA A+ and about 9–12 months of networking experience.

Why should I take the exam?

What this credential does for your career.

  • 1The industry-standard, vendor-neutral networking certification recognized by employers worldwide
  • 2The recommended foundation before Security+ and vendor tracks like Cisco CCNA
  • 3Teaches transferable skills — the OSI model, subnetting, routing, and troubleshooting — that apply to any network
  • 4Opens the door to network administrator, network technician, and help-desk/support roles

Skills measured

What you need to know to pass this exam.

  • Explain the OSI model layers and map protocols, devices, and PDUs to each layer
  • Identify common ports and protocols (HTTP/S, DNS, DHCP, SSH, SMTP, SNMP, and more) and their use
  • Compare network appliances, applications, and functions (routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, proxies)
  • Apply IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, subnetting (CIDR/VLSM), and address types (public, private, APIPA)
  • Configure routing and switching technologies: VLANs, trunking, STP, static and dynamic routing
  • Implement wireless networks: 802.11 standards, frequencies, channels, and security
  • Support network operations: documentation, monitoring, SNMP, high availability, and disaster recovery
  • Apply network security concepts: segmentation, hardening, authentication, and common attacks/mitigations
  • Follow a structured troubleshooting methodology to resolve cabling, connectivity, and performance issues
  • Use command-line tools (ping, traceroute, ipconfig/ifconfig, nslookup/dig, netstat) to diagnose networks
