Overview

What this certification is and how the exam works.

The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) is the vendor-neutral entry point to the International Software Testing Qualifications Board scheme and the most widely held software testing certification in the world, with well over a million exams delivered. Syllabus v4.0, released in April 2023, is a substantial rewrite of the 2018 version: it reorganises the material into six chapters, strengthens the coverage of testing in Agile and DevOps contexts, and shifts emphasis from memorising definitions to applying techniques. The six chapters are Fundamentals of Testing (8 questions), Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (6), Static Testing (4), Test Analysis and Design (11), Managing the Test Activities (9), and Test Tools (2). The exam is 40 single-mark multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with a pass mark of 65% — 26 of 40 — and candidates sitting the exam in a language that is not their native language are granted 25% extra time. Questions are set at cognitive levels K1 (recall), K2 (understand), and K3 (apply); Test Analysis and Design is where the K3 questions concentrate, so the black-box and white-box techniques must be practised rather than merely read. There are no formal prerequisites, and the certification does not expire.

Why should I take the exam?

What this credential does for your career.

  • 1The most widely recognised software testing certification worldwide, and vendor-neutral — it transfers across employers, tools, and technology stacks
  • 2Frequently listed as a requirement or strong preference in QA and test engineer job postings, particularly in Europe and Asia
  • 3Establishes the shared vocabulary — error, defect, failure, test level, test type, coverage — that testing teams and their stakeholders rely on
  • 4The mandatory gateway to every ISTQB Advanced and Specialist certification, including Agile Tester, Test Automation Engineer, and Test Analyst
  • 5No prerequisites and no expiry, which makes it an accessible first certification for developers, business analysts, and career changers as well as testers

Skills measured

What you need to know to pass this exam.

  • Explain what testing is and why it is necessary, and apply the seven testing principles
  • Distinguish errors, defects, failures, and root causes, and describe the test process and its activities
  • Relate test levels and test types to software development lifecycle models, including sequential, iterative, and Agile approaches
  • Describe unit, integration, system, and acceptance testing, and distinguish functional, non-functional, black-box, and white-box testing
  • Apply static testing: review types, the formal review process, review roles, and the value of static analysis
  • Apply black-box techniques: equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, and state transition testing
  • Apply white-box techniques: statement coverage and branch coverage, and explain the value of white-box testing
  • Apply experience-based techniques: error guessing, exploratory testing, and checklist-based testing
  • Contribute to test planning, estimation, and risk-based testing, including product and project risk analysis
  • Monitor and control test activities using metrics and reports, and write clear, actionable defect reports
  • Describe categories of test tools and the benefits and risks of test automation
