Overview
What this certification is and how the exam works.
The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level Agile Tester (CTFL-AT) is the Foundation Level extension for testers working in Agile teams. It is an extension rather than a standalone certification: CTFL is a formal prerequisite, and the syllabus assumes its vocabulary rather than restating it. Three chapters make up the exam — Agile Software Development, Fundamental Agile Testing Principles, Practices and Processes, and Agile Testing Methods, Techniques and Tools. The third chapter dominates: it carries roughly two thirds of both the recommended study time and the exam questions, and it is where the K3 application questions concentrate — test-driven, acceptance-test-driven and behaviour-driven development, the test pyramid and testing quadrants, quality risk analysis and iteration estimation, writing testable user stories with acceptance criteria, and session-based exploratory testing. The exam is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes with a 65% pass mark, and candidates sitting in a non-native language receive 25% extra time. Note that ISTQB is phasing this certification out: exams and training are available until 6 May 2027 for English and 6 November 2027 for other languages. Agile material is now also covered within CTFL v4.0 at foundation level, with Certified Tester Advanced Level Agile Tester v2.0 (CTAL-AT) as the advanced successor.
